Rally Team

Allonby based West Cumbrian motorsport enthusiast Richard Barnard, 29, made the long trek to Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland recently to use the Memorial Garden Stages Rally, organised by Glenrothes Motor Sport Club, as a shakedown event for a planned mixture of events he has scheduled for 2017.

The rally was based at the Condor Military base near Arbroath and attracted a small field of around 30 competitors with Richard being seeded number 16 on his first visit to this venue. The rally would feature 8 special stages covering 51 competitive miles on a mixture of surfaces - tarmac, gravel and grass.

It became apparent very early on that 4 wheel drive would be the order of the day on the predominately loose surface stages which meant Richard’s 2 wheel drive BMW would have its work cut out to remain competitive. After the first two stages he was lying 8th overall and the 2nd two wheel drive car and this was a position he would hold to the end of the rally finishing in 8th place and 3rd two wheel drive car.

A lot was learnt about the BMW’s handling and this knowledge will now be put to good effect with Richard planning to enter the Superlap Scotland Championship that is based at the Knockhill Circuit north of Edinburgh. This will be Richard’s first foray into this form of motorsport having previously competed on autotests, autosolos, sprints and special stage rallies since the age of 17.
